These days Online Video Streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube have made watching movies and video content much easier. Not only movies but Web Series are even more popular on these platforms. And in today’s video, we are talking about Paatal Lok‘s dialogue that created controversy among Nepalese residing in Nepal and Nepalese diaspora living around the world.
Talking about Paatal Lok, it is an Indian web series aired in Prime Video from 15th May 2020. This series is produced by Clean Slate Filmz (Anushka Sharma’s Production house) and directed by Prosit Roy and Avinash Arun Dhaware. The story of this series is created by Sudip Sharma. Various news reports suggest that the story of this series is similar to the story of the book The Story of My Assassins by Tarun J. Tejpal.
Coming back into the point, on the second episode of this series, there is a dialogue of woman constable at 3 minutes and 34 seconds, where she had the script to say “Nepali Whore” to the character Cheeni. This is the reason that the film is creating controversy among the citizen of Nepal as well as the Indian Nepalese of north-east India. In the story of the series, Cheeni along with three others were arrested before the murder of Sanjeev Mehera, a renowned Journalist, they were about to commit. And this dialogue was spoken during the investigation process by the woman constable.
These dialogues have raised a lot of criticism as well as questions about the truth of perception of India towards Nepal. There are many Nepalese actresses raising voices against the particular dialogue stating that it tries to defame the dignity of Nepalese women. Rekha Thapa, Reecha Sharma, Keki Adhikari, and various others took a step ahead to raise voice against this culture existing here for long. They have asked the creation team to delete that particular scene and apologize among the Nepalese around the world. Along with that, there are numerous comments against this dialogue in the series from Nepalese of Nepal as well as the Indian Nepalese of north-east India.
However, coming into reality, many Nepalese women sex workers are wandering in the streets of Indian cities with an expectation of earning a good amount of money. This is a truth and the series have tried to portray this untouched. Also coming over to factual data, the data published by friendsofwpcnepal.org suggest that around 12000 to 15000 girls are trafficked every year from the rural area of Nepal to India. Other than this huge number, there are many women and girls willingly selling themselves on the streets of India due to extreme poverty or because of a big dream to get quality lifestyles for their family.
Nepal has always been a great audience of Bollywood Cinemas. Bollywood Industry has a recognizable market share from the people of Nepal and Nepalese diaspora living around the globe including the Indian Nepalese of North-east India. Nowadays, the market share is even rising due to global streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Not only the market share, but even Nepalese viewers are also increasing day by day. We can also say that Nepalese people celebrate Bollywood as much as the Indian people do.
Coming back to the topic again, what do you think about the inclusion of such dialogue in the series? Does it make sense or it is quite offensive to use such words into the picture? Please write your views into the comment sections below.
